Election Year

14 03 2010

This year is an election year in Sweden for the Swedish parliament.  At the moment the modertparty in Sweden has the majority and rule Sweden together with some smaller right wing parties (centerpartiet, folkpartiet and kritdemokraterna). I’m  a strong believer in the ability of the individual, freedom from government control and high taxes, and I would find it almost completely unacceptable and a bad move for Sweden in these hard economic hard times if the opposition lead my Mona Sahlin would win.

Mona Sahlin may be the Social Democrats pick for their leader but she should under no circumstances become Prime Minister. We must remember that Mona has done a lot of the mistakes. Mona has in addition to the “interest-free loans,” she took on the government credit cards, illegally hired a babysitter, failed to pay the TV fee and didn’t’ pay about 100 parking tickets in time. These events also caused her to resign as deputy prime minister and leave the government at the time.

Mona Sahlin

“If two equally qualified persons apply for a job at a workplace with few immigrants, the one named Mohammed should get the job.” Mona Sahlin (dåvarande Integration Minister) in an interview published in Göteborgs-Posten, 22 October 2000.

“It must be cool to pay taxes.” Mona Sahlin on Wood Workers’ Union Congress, August 1993.

“I took an advance of salary, as most people do.” Mona Sahlin to Expressen reporters the day after the revelation that she spent 25 229 SEK of taxpayers’ money for private purchases.

Swedish Music

8 03 2010

Sweden has one of the world’s largest music industries, producing music for domestic and international artists. Some of Swedes largest artists/bands are ABBA, Ace of Base, Roxset and many more. Sweden also has some unequal Swedish music, namely schlager and dansband, both of which sound horrible.

In Sweden we also have melodifestivalen, it’s a competition where the winning artist gets to represent Sweden in the Eurovision song contest. Melodifestivalen is also the place where shlager has its roots. The last time Sweden won the ESC was back in 1999 with Charlotte Nilsson with take Take Me to Your Heaven in Jerusalem, Israel

Chemical Vocation

Although I don’t like most Swedish music we have some grate bands, like Chemical Vocation and a few other ones. CV are a band from Udevalla (outside of Gothenburg), they are not very well known but they do tour around an visit local venues.

In Sweden a lot of young people are active in some kind of sports, most common are probably soccer and hockey, and bout about 20% of the total population are members of a sports club. Oddly American sorts are rarely practiced in Sweden other than basketball, but if you look you can find some football, baseball and cheerleading clubs in Sweden. Another common pastime is video/computer games and Sweden hosts the largest LAN party in the world (dreamhack).

Soaring

I personally can’t stand soccer of hockey but I do snowboard and soaring. Snowboarding is quite common among young people in Sweden.

Illegal substances

7 03 2010

Sweden has very hard laws prohibiting narcotics and steroids. There is also almost no debate in about the possibility of legalizing drugs such as marihuana for medical use ether. Enforcement of the laws varies form of widespread drug testing, and penalties ranging from rehabilitation treatment, fines, and up to a 10-year in prison. Also a report by the UNODC lauded Sweden for having one of the lowest drug usage rates in the western world, however According to the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction in 2005 the rate of drug-related deaths per capita in Sweden was more than twice that of the Netherlands.

However I don’t agree with Sweden’s drug laws, I believe that marijuana should be legal both fore recreational and medical use, but when it comes to heavier narcotics my thoughts are thorn… if it were legal it would take a lot of the funding away from criminal organizations, but it could increase the abuse. And even thou Sweden see itself as a country in the forefront on the fight on drugs, I know a lot of people have tried illegal drugs and almost everyone know how to get drugs.

Swedish food

3 03 2010

Traditional Swedish food is mostly centered on potatoes but also consists if breads, berries, meats (like beef and pork), seafood. I personally can’t stand most traditional Swedish food, because I get tired of all the potatoes and poor quality of the food. Swedish pastries are less sweet than in many other countries and are mostly consumed during fika (coffeebrakes) with poor tasting coffee.  Btw if you are a vegetarian or have other dietary needs make sure to eat-out at good restaurants, sweds generally seem to believe vegetarian food has to be cooked with bad products and that is should be flavored less.

This said Swedish people are grate at embracing other food cultures and there is no problem finding international food!

My favorite restaurants around Gothenburg.
  • EEST – Located in Borås, serves some of Sweden’s best sushi and is featured in the white guide.
  • Hard Rock Café – Just like the other HRC’s around the world.
  • Fond – Traditional Swedish food with an edge, is a modern and luxuries place for everyone.
  • Heaven 23 – located on the 23rd floor of Gothia Tower, it’s an amazing eating environment with beautiful views of Gothenburg.
The best sauce/dressing ever.
  • 1/4 cup chopped onion
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 1/2 ounce gingerroot
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon white vinegar (rice vinegar)

Combined all of the ingredients in a blender and blend at low speed until the gingerroot and garlic have been puréed. Chill before serving.

This sauce is good for everything, like meats, chicken or salads!
